Funny Renault commercial: “We live in modern times”

French automaker Renault ran commercials that promoted “living in modern times.” They hit YouTube earlier this year, and this particular one promotes accepting alternative lifestyles.

A few months ago, McDonald’s France released a gay ad campaign. Earlier this year, France de-listed transgenderism as a mental illness.

Update: Some people have pointed out that it is unclear what the son says in the ad. He says “Can you get us in?”

French public opinion on homosexuality

According to PEW Research’s Global Attitudes Project (2007), 83% of the French public believe that “homosexuality should be accepted by society.” This percentage is one of the highest among countries surveyed. This month, a Crédoc survey (July, 2010) showed that 61% of respondents support gay marriage while 41% support same-sex adoption. Over the past 3 years, these statistics have increased 6% and 8%, respectively.

France de-lists transgenderism as a mental illness

France has become the first country in the world to declassify transgenderism as a mental illness. Health minister Roselyne Bachelot announced in May last year, that the country would move to de-list the condition as a mental illness. A government decree on Wednesday confirmed the change.

Medical opinion once held that homosexuality was a mental illness. It was removed from the list of mental disorders by the World Health Organization in 1990.

Gay ‘Kiss-In’ In Paris Takes Place Despite Threats

A gay kiss-in took place in Paris, despite threats of violence.

Towleroad reports:

“The "kiss-in” had originally been planned to take place in front of Notre Dame Cathedral but Christian Fundamentalist websites called in to “defend their faith against this provocation” using 'aids bags’, 'sodomites’ and other homophobic insults. The websites called for a violent response so the organizers decided to change the location to place Saint Michel in the nearby Latin Quarter, after the police strongly encouraged it, saying they could not protect them in case of trouble. The kiss in was held peacefully at St-Michel but some gays went to Notre Dame anyway and witnesses are saying 200 Christian activists were expecting them, and after they started kissing, they were attacked with motorbike helmets and kicked.“

Gay Valentine’s Day Kiss-In at Notre Dame Cathedral

A French, gay rights organization will be staging a “kiss-in” tomorrow at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Dozens of same-sex couples are expected to turn up and kiss for five minutes at 2 P.M. after services at the cathedral.

Organizer Arthur Vautier told Paris gay magazine Tetu, that the demonstration is meant to “challenge the Church to question religion on the issue of love and marriage between gays and between lesbians.”
