American gay couple from the late 1800s?

Justin Scott shared this with us:

It is an amazing photo of a gay couple in the late 1800s in America. These two guys, presumably, paid a photographer to set them down in front of a tintype camera and shoot a photo of their love and intimacy.

Is it too high quality for the 1800s? Are the subjects’ looks too modern? Whether its fake or not, its clever.

What do you think? Is it fake? Reblog with your opinions!

UPDATE: Justin has updated his post to include original scans. This is a tintype photo and Justin has said that “it was purchased at an antique store with several family photos of the same time period, some tintype, daguerreotypes a few on paper.” Please see Justin’s original post before you make full judgments. :)
