New laws protect gay and lesbian rights in Utah
Two new laws come into effect this week, defending gay rights in Salt Lake City. The ordinances will protect residents from being discriminated against based on their sexual orientation and gender identity.
The first ordinance “relates to unlawful discriminatory employment practices based on sexual orientation or gender identity.” The second ordinance “relates to unlawful discriminatory housing practices based on sexual orientation or gender identity.”
“These ordinances demonstrate our determination to foster an environment of good will and acceptance welcoming every member of the community as an integral part of our Great American City. Everyone in Salt Lake City will benefit from the protections these ordinances provide” said Mayor Ralph Becker.
City leaders believe that the new ordinances will serve as a model for other communities throughout Utah and the nation that are working to pass similar legislation.
