BREAKING: Uganda Will Ask Lawmaker to Withdraw Controversial Anti-Gay Bill
After months of international pressure, death threats and petitioning, the Ugandan government has said that it will ask a lawmaker to withdraw proposed legislation that would further criminalize homosexuality, and in a previous revision of the bill, it could give homosexuals the death penalty. The New York Times reports that the Minister of State has said that the government fears international backlash and that the bill causes image problems for the country.
Homosexual acts are already illegal in Uganda, and homosexuality is generally seen as taboo. Uganda is still far from being an LGBT-friendly country, but this is a significant event that may stop Uganda from taking a huge step away from LGBT equality.
